Binga Communities Reap Benefits from Lungwalala Irrigation Scheme
By Enia Dube
Communities in Binga, Matabeleland North, are celebrating a bountiful harvest at the Lungwalala Irrigation Scheme in Kariangwe Village.
The scheme, which has been transformed into a thriving Village Business Unit (VBU), is expected to yield a significant amount of sorghum and millet, with 27 hectares currently ready for harvest.
Under the leadership of Chief Siansali, the community has embraced small grain production, and their hard work is paying off.
The scheme produces high-quality seeds annually, which are sold to Seedco, a leading seed company in Zimbabwe. This initiative has not only improved food security in the area but also generated income for local farmers.
The Lungwalala Irrigation Scheme is a testament to the power of community-led development projects. With the support of organizations like Icrisat, the community has been able to diversify its crops and improve its agricultural practices.
The scheme’s success has also inspired other farmers in the region to explore small grain production, which is more resilient to climate change.
The Binga community’s achievement is a shining example of how Village Business Units can drive economic growth and improve livelihoods in rural areas. As the community continues to reap the benefits of their hard work, they are also contributing to Zimbabwe’s food security and economic development.
