Botswana has secured a landmark football development partnership with Manchester United, President Duma Gideon Boko confirmed, in a move aimed at strengthening coaching standards and grassroots football across the country.

As part of the initiative, six local coaches from Botswana’s domestic leagues will travel to Manchester for specialised training. The programme will expose them to elite football operations, advanced academy systems, and best practices from one of the world’s top football clubs.

President Boko said the scheme is intended to ensure that the knowledge and skills gained abroad are brought back home to improve player development pathways, elevate coaching expertise, and support the sustainable growth of football in Botswana. The names of the selected coaches are expected to be announced on Monday.

To mark the partnership, Boko received a signed Premier League match ball and an autographed Manchester United jersey, a gesture coordinated through the club’s ownership group led by British businessman Sir Jim Ratcliffe.

Officials said the collaboration goes beyond symbolic gestures, focusing on tangible skills transfer, long-term football development, and expanding opportunities at the grassroots level.

The deal is hailed as one of the most significant international football collaborations ever achieved by Botswana and is expected to enhance the country’s football profile
