Transport and Infrastructural Development Minister Hon. Adv. Felix Mhona has inspected the Charara–Kanyati (Gache Gache) road as the government moves to improve transport between Kariba Urban and Kariba Rural.
The road, which is about 105 kilometres long, is expected to provide a reliable land route for communities that currently depend largely on boat services.
Speaking during the visit, Minister Mhona said the visit followed President Emmerson Mnangagwa’s directive to find a lasting solution to transport challenges affecting people in the area.
“We are seeing the road that we’ve been briefed about, which is about 105 kilometres, and the idea is to see how we can move with speed so that we promote accessibility and ensure the road is traffickable,” said the Minister.
The rehabilitation of the road is expected to make it possible for public transport services to return to the route, giving residents another option for travelling between Kariba Urban and rural communities.
Minister Mhona said the project was also part of Government’s wider plans to improve regional connectivity.
“Better roads would strengthen Zimbabwe’s links with neighbouring countries through the Beira Corridor and the North-South Corridor. These routes connect Zimbabwe with countries including Mozambique, Zambia, Malawi and the Democratic Republic of Congo, supporting trade and tourism across the region,” he said.
The improved road is also expected to make it easier for communities to access markets, schools, health facilities and other essential services.
For Kariba residents, the project could reduce their dependence on boat transport and provide a more reliable way of moving people and goods.
The rehabilitation is also expected to support tourism and economic activity in the Kariba area by improving access to communities and businesses.
“The government was focused on ensuring that infrastructure development benefits communities across the country,” said Hon. Mhona.
The Charara–Kanyati road is therefore expected to play an important role in connecting Kariba’s urban and rural areas while contributing to Zimbabwe’s wider transport network.
The project reflects Government’s stated goal of ensuring that “no one and no place is left behind.”
