Education Ministry Moves to Add Catholic Heritage Text to Schools
The Ministry of Primary and Secondary Education (MoPSE) is set to include a Roman Catholic history book in the national school curriculum under its heritage-based education programme.
The announcement was made by MoPSE’s Torerayi Moyo during the launch of the book “How Beautiful The Feet That Bring Good News” at Dominican Convent, Harare, where he was the guest of honour.
“I will assign the Chief Director responsible for Curriculum Development to review the book so that it may be considered for inclusion among approved learning materials as we implement the heritage-based curriculum,” Moyo said.
Authored by Ferrera Weinzierl, the book chronicles the history and legacy of the Dominican Sisters in Zimbabwe, highlighting their significant role in shaping the country’s education and health sectors.
It captures over a century of the sisters’ missionary work and their influence in nurturing prominent figures, including International Olympic Committee (IOC) President Kirsty Coventry.
Monica Nyachowe, head of Dominican schools, welcomed the development, describing it as an honour and a recognition of the church’s contribution to Zimbabwe’s education system.
“We are humbled and excited to know that the book is being considered for use in schools,” Nyachowe said. “Anyone seeking to understand the foundation of Zimbabwean education must acknowledge the Dominican Missionary Sisters’ lasting impact. Their contribution is deeply woven into the country’s educational history.”
She added that incorporating the book into the curriculum would be a fitting way to preserve and celebrate that legacy for future generations.
