Zimbabwean UFC fighter Themba Gorimbo has clarified his previous comments about Zimbabwe, saying he still has deep love for his country and now regrets remarks made during a period of anger and emotional pain.
Gorimbo said his decision to distance himself from Zimbabwe was influenced by personal experiences that left him disappointed and hurt.
He explained that his earlier statements were made while he was dealing with emotional distress and frustrations, including what he described as disappointment on the government side.
In January, Gorimbo sparked debate after saying he no longer considered himself part of Zimbabwe, declaring that he belonged to the universe. He also spoke about feeling unsupported by some Zimbabweans, including people close to him.
However, Gorimbo has now said his actions throughout his fighting career showed how proud he was of his Zimbabwean roots.
He recalled regularly wearing the Zimbabwean flag on his fighting gear and said he once turned down a US$50,000 sponsorship opportunity because he wanted to wear clothing carrying Zimbabwe’s name.
According to Gorimbo, his meeting with members of ZANU PF in New York over the weekend also gave him an opportunity to reflect on his previous comments.
He said he had decided to withdraw his earlier remarks and reaffirm his love for Zimbabwe.
Gorimbo also apologised to people who criticised him without knowing what had led to his earlier decision.
He ended by saying he remained focused on his journey and the future of his story.
