Zimbabwe has become a regional trailblazer in aviation safety after adopting the European Coordination Centre for Accident and Incident Reporting Systems (ECCAIRS2), a cutting-edge digital platform that strengthens compliance with international safety standards, the Ministry of Transport and Infrastructural Development announced yesterday.

The move positions the country firmly among global best practices for mandatory occurrence reporting under International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) rules.

“By adopting the ECCAIRS2 platform, Zimbabwe is setting a new standard for aviation safety,” said a ministry statement released following the rollout of the system.

The platform, spearheaded by the Air Accidents and Incidents Investigation Department, Zimbabwe’s statutory authority for civil aviation investigations , enables smarter analysis of safety incidents and more proactive risk identification.

“This cutting-edge digital tool strengthens our compliance with ICAO’s mandatory occurrence reporting requirements, placing the country firmly among global best practices,” the ministry added.

Aviation analysts described the move as a significant leap for an African nation often overlooked in global safety rankings.

“Bottom line, safer skies and stronger systems for everyone who flies with us,” the statement concluded, calling the adoption “more than an upgrade” but rather “our unwavering commitment to safety excellence in action.”

The development is expected to enhance real-time data sharing and incident prevention across Zimbabwean airspace.
