Mayor Mafume Breaks New Ground with Continental Appointment
Jacob Mafume has been elected to the board of the United Cities and Local Governments of Africa (UCLG Africa), representing the Southern African Region.
He was elected during the organisation’s caucus meeting held in Harare at the weekend, marking a significant milestone for the City of Harare on the continental stage.
The City of Harare congratulated the Mayor on his appointment, describing it as recognition of the city’s ongoing efforts to improve service delivery and governance.
Speaking to Hurumende News Hub, Mayor Mafume said his election aligns with Zimbabwe’s broader diplomatic thrust.
“We are working on President Emmerson Mnangagwa’s mantra of international and regional integration and cooperation. As council, we are implementing this at local government level so that we share knowledge in developing our cities in line with regional standards,” said Mafume.
A lawyer by profession, Mafume has been pushing reforms aimed at improving service delivery in Harare. Residents have recently witnessed improvements in waste management through a Public Private Partnership arrangement with Geo Pomona.
The city is also undertaking a major water system upgrade programme. So far, over 11,000 smart water meters have been installed as part of efforts to enhance water management and revenue collection.
In addition, the City of Harare has embarked on a large-scale water pipe replacement project designed to improve water delivery to residents across the capital.
Mafume’s election to the continental body is expected to strengthen Harare’s regional cooperation efforts and create opportunities for knowledge exchange with other African cities.
The City of Harare wished the Mayor success in his new continental role.
