Midlands Minister of State for Provincial Affairs and Devolution, Honourable Owen Ncube, has donated groceries and construction materials to Kwekwe Prison as part of efforts to strengthen inmate welfare and rehabilitation initiatives.
The donation, funded through proceeds from the 2026 Midlands Provincial Independence Ball, comprised mealie-meal, rice, sugar, cooking oil, salt, green bar soap, tea leaves, tissues, petroleum jelly, refuse bins, hard brooms, chunks, and 20 bags of cement.
Speaking at the handover ceremony , Honourable Ncube said the contribution demonstrates the Government’s continued commitment to supporting vulnerable groups and promoting successful offender rehabilitation.
“This generous gesture has become an annual event and complements the Social Safety Nets provided by the Second Republic. There is life after prison, and our focus remains on rehabilitating and reintegrating offenders into society while upholding human dignity,” he said.
Receiving the donation, Acting Officer Commanding Midlands Province, Assistant Commissioner Clemence Chigogo, thanked the Minister for the assistance, saying it would have a positive impact on prison operations.
“These provisions will go a long way in supporting our rehabilitation programmes and improving the welfare of inmates, particularly those at Kwekwe Prison,” he said.
Officer-in-Charge of Kwekwe Prison, Superintendent Eliot Maburutse, also welcomed the donation and noted the increasing demand for healthcare services at the institution, particularly for inmates requiring treatment for chronic illnesses.
Representing fellow inmates, Keith Machokoto expressed appreciation for the support and encouragement extended to those serving sentences.
“Your kindness, compassion and commitment bring hope and encouragement to many lives, especially us who are in incarceration,” he said.
