Navaya Lands in Warriors Camp with Confidence and Comic Charm
If confidence could score goals, then Zimbabwe would already be leading 3–0 before kickoff.
TelOne FC striker Washington Navaya, the current Castle Lager Premier Soccer League top scorer with a sizzling 17 goals, has joined the Warriors camp in Saudi Arabia with both humility and a hint of swagger, promising fireworks as Zimbabwe fine tunes preparations for their upcoming friendlies against Algeria.
“I just want to thank the coaches for the opportunity they’ve given me,” Navaya said, flashing the easy smile of a man who knows where the back of the net is. “I’m so happy because it’s something I’ve been looking forward to all along.”
Fresh off a golden domestic campaign, the red hot forward is hoping to bring his Premier League form to the national stage and if possible, his scoring boots too.
“I hope the form that I had when I was playing in the Premier League will be the same form I have when I play for the Warriors,” he said. “We’re learning a lot from our new coach, things we’ve never encountered before, but it’s helping us grow as a team.”
The Warriors, currently in Riyadh for high profile friendlies, are being molded under a technical setup that’s clearly stretching boundaries and expectations. Navaya says the players are not just training; they’re absorbing a new football education.
“As a team we promise to work hard and produce results,” he added with conviction. “Some of the teams we’re playing now are the same ones we’ll meet at AFCON, so this is the perfect test.”
And when it comes to personal targets, the 17 goal man keeps it simple, “My goal as a striker is to score goals.”
That’s Navaya in a nutshell: confident, grounded, and armed with a hunger that could light up the Warriors’ frontline.
So, as the Warriors prepare to take on Algeria, one thing is certain, Washington Navaya hasn’t flown all the way to Saudi Arabia just to watch the sunset. He’s there to make the net dance.
