Over 1,100 Undocumented Zimbabweans Stopped by South African Troops
South African soldiers intercepted more than 1,100 undocumented Zimbabwean nationals in the past week as security patrols were intensified along the Zimbabwe–South Africa border during the festive season.
Authorities said the individuals were attempting to enter South Africa using unauthorised crossing points. During the operation, some of those intercepted allegedly turned violent, with reports indicating that one SANDF member was stabbed and had to be rushed for medical treatment.
Social media videos show a large group of people including women carrying infants being halted by soldiers and directed to move in single file through areas partly submerged in muddy water.
The South African National Defence Force described the incident as highly unusual for the holiday period, noting that they had not previously encountered such a large number of people attempting to cross the border at once during this time of year.
“This is the first time our troops have had to deal with an influx of this magnitude over the festive season,” the SANDF said in a statement.
Officials confirmed that all intercepted individuals were handled in accordance with immigration regulations and were handed over to the appropriate authorities for further processing.
The SANDF has reiterated that enhanced border patrols will continue and warned that illegal entry into the country will be met with firm enforcement measures as security remains tight throughout the holiday season.
