President Emmerson Mnangagwa has called for greater adoption of Artificial Intelligence (AI) and digital technologies to transform Zimbabwe’s tourism sector and improve the experiences of visitors.

Speaking during the 19th Sanganai/Hlanganani World Tourism Expo, President Mnangagwa said this year’s theme, “Digital Agenda and Artificial Intelligence to Redesign Tourism”, was timely as the country seeks to modernise the sector.

“In the true spirit of the times, this year’s theme ‘Digital Agenda and Artificial Intelligence to Redesign Tourism’ is timely and forward looking. It must provoke the sector to reflect on the role of technology in tourism,” said President Mnangagwa.

“The deployment of Artificial Intelligence and digital technologies has immense potential to redesign tourism beyond policy and governance or operational efficiency, to enable smarter destination management. It can positively impact tourist experiences, while also promoting sustainable, inclusive and efficient travel.”

The President also toured exhibition stands at the tourism expo, visiting key exhibitors including the Zimbabwe Tourism Authority, the Office of the President and Cabinet – Masvingo Provincial Office, Mana Pools Resort, the Zambian Pavilion and Econet Wireless.

The tour highlighted Government’s efforts to support tourism stakeholders while promoting Zimbabwe’s diverse tourism products and services.

President Mnangagwa said the growth of the tourism sector was aligned with the Government’s broader economic transformation agenda under the Second Republic.

“This ecosystem, has remained the DNA of the ZANU PF-led Government. The tourism sector is demonstrating sustained growth, diversity and resilience, attributable to NDS-2 and Vision 2030,” he said.

“Models for tourism development must, therefore, continue on this transformative trajectory with tangible benefits, which help lift more people into a higher quality of life.”

The President also shared a lighter moment with Hon Joana Mamombe, Chairperson of the Parliamentary Portfolio Committee on Environment, Climate, Wildlife and Tourism, during the event.

The Sanganai/Hlanganani World Tourism Expo brings together tourism operators, exhibitors, buyers and other stakeholders to showcase destinations, products and services while creating opportunities for partnerships and investment in the sector.
