Harare, Zimbabwe – Zororo-Phumulani, a prominent funeral and repatriation services provider, has taken charge of the repatriation and funeral arrangements for the Masunda-Shoperai family. This follows a tragic incident on the N1 highway near Bela-Bela, Limpopo, South Africa, which resulted in the loss of three lives.
The devastating events have led to widespread mourning in both South Africa and Zimbabwe.
On May 9, 2026, Paul Masunda (44) was fatally struck by a light motor vehicle while attempting to cross the N1 highway. The incident occurred near an informal bus stop frequently used by individuals traveling north. Shortly after, upon learning of her husband’s death, Beauty Shoperai (37) disembarked from a nearby bus. With their two-year-old son, Paul Masunda Jr., strapped to her back, she attempted to cross the highway to reach her husband. Tragically, they were both hit by an official state vehicle transporting South African Health Minister Dr. Aaron Motsoaledi. Both Shoperai and the infant succumbed to their injuries at the scene.
In response to the profound trauma experienced by the surviving family members, Zororo-Phumulani announced today its commitment to fully manage the intricate cross-border logistics. The aim is to ensure the family receives a dignified burial in Zimbabwe.
Oliver Mufudze, Chief Executive Officer of Zororo-Phumulani, confirmed that the company acted swiftly to assume operational responsibility for the funeral arrangements. This involved close collaboration with South African authorities to expedite the necessary documentation.
“Our deepest sympathies are with the Masunda-Shoperai family during this incredibly difficult period,” stated Mr. Mufudze. “At Zororo-Phumulani, we believe no family should have to endure grief in isolation, especially when confronted with the painful and complex process of bringing their loved ones home. It is our privilege to support the family in ensuring a respectful repatriation and farewell for Beauty, Paul, and their beloved two-year-old son, Paul Junior.”
Mr. Mufudze also expressed formal appreciation to the Department of Health and its Port Health unit, which oversees cross-border health certifications, for their cooperation and prompt assistance in facilitating the process.
“We extend our profound gratitude to the Ministry of Health for the compassion, cooperation, and decisive support provided to the Masunda-Shoperai family during this heartbreaking time. Their involvement in facilitating the repatriation and funeral arrangements exemplifies the true spirit of ubuntu. It serves as a powerful reminder that in moments of sorrow, Africans unite to support one another through adversity,” Mr. Mufudze added.
Dr. Motsoaledi, who visited the grieving family last week to offer his condolences, described the incident as “devastating.” He confirmed that the Independent Police Investigative Directorate (IPID) is conducting ongoing culpable homicide investigations, as the drivers involved in both sequential accidents were members of the South African Police Service (SAPS).
Speaking on behalf of the bereaved relatives, Mr. Rabson Masunda conveyed profound relief and gratitude for the corporate and State support.
“The family sincerely thanks Zororo-Phumulani for the compassion, generosity, and humanity demonstrated following this tragic accident. Their assistance with the repatriation process has significantly eased the burden on the family during this painful time and will ensure our loved ones receive a dignified farewell in Zimbabwe,” he remarked.
The official schedule for the final rites has been finalized, with services set for Thursday, May 21, 2026, and the burial scheduled for Saturday, May 23, 2026, in Masvingo, Zimbabwe.
