R&B icon and global entrepreneur Akon has found himself at the centre of a major legal and financial dispute after his wife, Tomeka Thiam, filed for divorce, bringing an end to their 29-year marriage.

The separation has sparked widespread attention after court filings revealed that the multi-award-winning artist allegedly has only $10,000 in his personal bank account.

According to court documents, Thiam is demanding €100 million as part of the divorce settlement, claiming she played a crucial role in building Akon’s vast business empire, which includes investments in music production, real estate, and the Akon Lighting Africa project.

What surprised many was the discovery that much of Akon’s reported wealth estimated at over $60 million is not registered in his name but allegedly held under his mother’s account, leading to speculation that he may have transferred assets ahead of the divorce.

Legal experts warn that the case could become complex if the court confirms that Akon does not directly control his wealth.

“If the assets are not legally under his ownership, determining a fair settlement may prove challenging,” one family law specialist commented.

The revelations have stirred debate across social media, with fans divided over whether Akon is protecting his assets or experiencing genuine financial trouble.

As of now, Akon and his representatives have not commented on the matter, as the high-profile case continues to draw global media attention.
