Significant Progress Recorded on Gwanda–Maphisa Road Upgrade

The Ministry of Transport and Infrastructure Development’s media tour entered its second day yesterday with a field visit to the ongoing Gwanda–Maphisa Road project, where significant progress is being made on the ground.

The inspection was led by Hon. J.K. Sacco and Hon. A. Nguluvhe, who both underscored the project’s strategic role in enhancing connectivity and economic growth in Matabeleland South Province.

The project scope includes resealing 5 kilometres of the existing road and constructing a new 10-kilometre stretch, which is currently underway. Once completed, this infrastructure upgrade is expected to improve access between Gwanda and Maphisa, while serving as a vital transport link for communities and industries in the region.

Speaking during the inspection, Hon. Sacco highlighted the project’s broader economic and developmental importance.

“This area is a critical mining and ranching hub. This road is key to unlocking economic activity. The future scope will extend from Gwanda to Maphisa and onwards to the Mpoengs border post.

This new route will reduce travel times for those travelling from Botswana through Plumtree to the south, bypassing Bulawayo altogether,”said Hon.Sacco.

Hon. Nguluvhe, who also represents Matabeleland South, emphasized the urgency of completing the works ahead of the 2026 Independence Day celebrations, which will be hosted in Maphisa.

“Currently, travelling to Maphisa from areas like Beitbridge requires a long detour via Bulawayo.

We are committed to ensuring that all link roads to the venue are upgraded in preparation for this national event,” Hon Nguluvhe noted.

The Gwanda–Maphisa Road project forms part of the government’s broader National Transport Master Plan, which seeks to modernize Zimbabwe’s road infrastructure, enhance trade facilitation, and promote balanced regional development.

The Ministry’s media tour continues, officials reiterated their commitment to driving economic growth, connecting communities, and building a modern, efficient road network for a prosperous Zimbabwe.
