Sports and Recreation Commission (SRC) Director General Mavunga has said all sports matter when conducted properly, following his attendance at a Zimbabwe Spinners Association (ZISA) showcase in Chitungwiza.
Mavunga told Hurumende News Hub that sporting activities should be valued when they are done correctly, a message relevant to young people participating in less conventional disciplines such as car spinning.
The SRC announced his attendance, describing the showcase as part of an engagement with young people.
His presence brought the commission into contact with a sporting community whose interests extend beyond mainstream disciplines such as football, athletics and cricket.
For young enthusiasts, the engagement offers an opportunity to bring their interests and concerns to the attention of sports administrators.
It could provide a starting point for discussions about training, suitable venues and how participants can develop within organised sporting structures.
However, attendance at the event does not, on its own, amount to an announcement of funding, a new development programme or formal approval of individual activities.
Mavunga’s emphasis on sports being conducted correctly places responsible participation at the centre of that discussion.
In car spinning, the practical issues include driver preparation, vehicle condition, controlled venues and arrangements to protect spectators.
These are areas that organisers and sports administrators would need to address when considering wider youth participation.
