Zimbabwe Eyes AFCON 2028 Co-Hosting Bid with Proposed Victoria Falls Stadium
Zimbabwe has intensified efforts to become part of the hosting nations for the 2028 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON), with plans underway to construct a new football stadium in Victoria Falls.
The initiative was confirmed after Zimbabwe Football Association (ZIFA) president Nqobile Magwizi led a delegation to the tourism city on Tuesday for discussions with local authorities.
According to the Victoria Falls City Council, the visit focused on identifying suitable land for the development of a modern football facility that could strengthen Zimbabwe’s contribution to a regional AFCON hosting bid reportedly spearheaded by South Africa.
Magwizi, accompanied by ZIFA General Secretary Norman Gwangwadza, met council officials led by Town Clerk Ronnie Dube, alongside several councillors including ZIFA Southern Region vice-president Tafadzwa Mutowa.
Following the meeting, the delegation toured potential construction sites in Mkhosana and areas close to the Victoria Falls gorges.
City officials said the proposed project aims to deliver a state-of-the-art stadium complex aligned with Confederation of African Football (CAF) and FIFA standards. Plans include multiple arena facilities designed to support international matches and boost sports tourism in the region.
Victoria Falls is now being considered among the possible host cities as Zimbabwe strengthens its infrastructure ambitions ahead of the 2028 AFCON bid.
