Zimbabwe is intensifying preparations for the 70th Session of the Commission on the Status of Women (CSW70), with Hon. Monica Mutsvangwa, Minister of Information, Publicity and Broadcasting Services, convening a high-level pre-departure meeting with the national delegation set to represent the country in New York from 9 to 19 March 2026.

The meeting brought together key stakeholders, including Rev. Paul Damasane from the Office of the President and Cabinet, Hon. Getrude Mutandi, Chairperson of the Portfolio Committee on Women Affairs, as well as representatives from UNFPA, UN Women, and various civil society organisations.

“It is important that all stakeholders come together to ensure Zimbabwe’s delegation is fully prepared to engage meaningfully at CSW70,” said Hon. Minister Mutsvangwa.

This year’s CSW session will focus on the priority theme of strengthening access to justice for women and girls through inclusive legal systems, the elimination of discriminatory laws, and the removal of structural barriers that hinder equality.

“Ensuring equitable legal systems is at the heart of empowering women and girls globally,” Hon. Minister Mutsvangwa added, highlighting the relevance of the theme.

Addressing the delegation, the Minister commended Team Zimbabwe for its consistent performance at previous CSW engagements and encouraged members to continue projecting the country’s progress on the global stage.

“I urge you all to keep raising Zimbabwe’s flag high and showcase the tremendous work our country has done in advancing women’s rights,” she said.

She noted that the upcoming session presents an opportunity for Zimbabwe not only to share its achievements in promoting gender equality, but also to engage in global dialogue on challenges affecting women and girls.

“This platform allows us to both reflect on our progress and learn from the experiences of other nations,” Hon. Minister Mutsvangwa remarked.

Discussions during the preparatory meeting also centred on the review theme, which examines women’s full participation in public life and decision-making, as well as ongoing efforts to eliminate violence against women as part of broader gender empowerment initiatives.

“Women must have full voice and agency in leadership, and ending violence is key to achieving real equality,” she emphasised.

Hon. Minister Mutsvangwa highlighted strides Zimbabwe has made in strengthening its legal framework and improving gender parity in the public sector. She said participation at CSW70 would enable the country to assess progress, exchange best practices, and showcase national initiatives through side events, ministerial roundtables, and general discussions scheduled alongside the main session.

“We have made great progress, but CSW70 is an opportunity to share our lessons and inspire continued change,” she concluded.

The global forum, convened under the auspices of the United Nations, is expected to bring together governments and stakeholders from across the world to advance policies that promote justice, inclusion, and empowerment for women and girls.
