Education development in Zvishavane has received a major lift after 64 primary schools were equipped with more than 6,000 textbooks through a public-private partnership aimed at easing long-standing shortages of learning materials.

Many schools across Zimbabwe continue to struggle with limited teaching resources, inadequate library facilities and restricted access to reading content. The latest intervention, supported by government and development partners, is expected to strengthen the teaching and learning environment in the district.

Director for Coordination in the Office of the Midlands Minister of State for Provincial Affairs and Devolution, Mr Kudakwashe Machako, said properly resourced schools are key to improving academic performance.

“We strongly believe that once these schools are well equipped, poor results will be a thing of the past. We want to provide a favourable environment that helps learners and their teachers achieve better grades,” he said.

Teachers in the district say the books are already making a difference.

“We are grateful for the books donated to the school. These resources will broaden our children’s minds and support their intellectual development,” one teacher said.

Another added: “These interventions breathe life into school environments and bring back the joy of reading. We appreciate this gesture by government and its development partners.”

Schools involved in the programme have also reported improved reading habits among learners, higher classroom engagement and increased teacher confidence in managing library resources.

Midlands Provincial Education Director, Mr Jameson Machimbira, said the development supports efforts to strengthen the heritage-based education framework.

“We feel it is vital to nurture a reading culture in young children. A strong reading habit ensures a smooth learning journey and builds lifelong skills,” he said.

Government says continuous investment in school infrastructure and learning materials demonstrates its commitment to expanding access to quality education under President Emmerson Mnangagwa’s inclusive development agenda.
