A sombre atmosphere filled St Joseph’s Primary School in Mutare as First Lady Dr Auxillia Mnangagwa joined hundreds of mourners to bid farewell to 13-year-old Adrian Tavonga Gurumbadza, a brave boy whose story touched hearts across Zimbabwe.

Adrian, a Grade Seven pupil, passed away from kidney cancer just days after fulfilling his two greatest wishes — meeting the First Lady and finishing his Grade Seven exams.

Dr Mnangagwa had earlier visited Adrian at St Joseph’s Hospital, where she comforted him, brought medication, and gave him words of encouragement. During that visit, Adrian thanked her and expressed his wish to be buried near his grandfather if he passed away.

At the funeral, the First Lady was emotional as she comforted Adrian’s parents, Wellington and Moslin Gurumbadza, and the Mutare community. She said President Mnangagwa had sent his condolences, describing the boy’s death as a painful loss to the nation.

“Adrian was a child of courage and hope. His strength should inspire other children to work hard, stay in school, and avoid drugs,” she said.

Learners paid tribute through poems, songs, and messages, remembering Adrian as a determined pupil who believed he would pass with six units. His classmates sang and recited poetry in both English and Shona, celebrating his short but inspiring life.

Adrian’s father thanked the First Lady and the President for their support, saying Adrian found peace after meeting “Amai” and completing his exams.

Minister of State for Manicaland, Advocate Misheck Mugadza, praised the First Lady’s compassion, saying her visit to Adrian showed true servant leadership.

St Joseph’s headmaster, Mr Itai Collin Ganyani, described Adrian as an obedient and hardworking child who never gave up despite his illness.

Adrian was laid to rest at Yeovil Cemetery in Mutare amid songs, prayers, and tears. The First Lady placed wreaths on his grave, honouring a young life that inspired the nation with courage, faith, and hope.
