President Emmerson Mnangagwa Leads UNSC Bid
President Emmerson Mnangagwa will preside over the official launch of Zimbabwe’s campaign for a non-permanent seat on the United Nations Security Council for the 2027-2028 term on Tuesday at the Harare International Conference Centre.
The event, themed “Advancing 21st Century Solutions for Global Peace and Security through Multilateralism,” underscores Zimbabwe’s push to amplify African voices in international peacekeeping and diplomacy.
The campaign has already secured endorsements from the Southern African Development Community (SADC), the African Union (AU), and strategic partners including Russia, India, Cuba, and Senegal.
The UN Security Council comprises five permanent members, China, Russia, France, the United Kingdom, and the United States, with veto power, alongside ten non-permanent members elected for two-year rotational terms by the UN General Assembly.
Zimbabwe’s bid targets one of the two African seats available in the 2026 election, which will determine the 2027-2028 composition.
Cabinet approved the campaign strategy in April, with a parallel launch planned for September during the 80th UN General Assembly in New York.
Information Minister Jenfan Muswere described the effort as a reaffirmation of Zimbabwe’s commitment to global peace and security.
