President Mnangagwa Unveils $25m Football Boost
A landmark US$25 million investment into Zimbabwean football was unveiled yesterday with the launch of the Munhumutapa Challenge Cup, a nationwide tournament set to transform the sport across all levels over the next five years.
The competition will receive US$5 million annually, shared across men’s and women’s football, junior structures (Under-14 and Under-16), 5-A-Side and beach football, marking one of the most significant financial commitments to local football development in recent years.
Launching the programme, President Emmerson Mnangagwa underscored the inclusive vision behind the initiative.
“No province, no district, no talent must be left behind,” President Mnangagwa said.
He welcomed the inter-ministerial collaboration supporting the programme.
“I welcome the collaboration between the sport ministry, primary and secondary education ministry and ZIFA… it will ensure football is entrenched within our education ecosystem,” he said.
The President emphasised that women’s football is central to the tournament’s structure.
“The importance of integrating women’s football cannot be overemphasised. This ensures our girls, in rural and urban areas, have access to equal opportunities to explore their God-given talents.”
In a rallying call, he said:
“Let this tournament connect villages to cities and build bridges. I wish this great Munhumutapa Challenge Cup success.”
The Munhumutapa Cup, under the banner of the Zimbabwe Football Association, is designed as a national programme reflecting inclusivity and broad participation.
It brings together Premiership clubs, lower divisions, Area Zones, social teams, grassroots sides and junior teams in the Under-14 and Under-16 categories.
The senior men’s champions will earn the prestigious honour of representing Zimbabwe in the CAF Confederation Cup, giving the tournament continental significance.
Dedicated investment in the women’s and junior competitions aims to expand participation and deepen talent development nationwide.
Acting Minister of Sports, Hon. T. Machakaire, said the competition reflects the Second Republic’s commitment to youth empowerment.
“The Munhumutapa Cup showcases the Second Republic’s focus on sport and youth empowerment. It promotes character, discipline and resilience while combating drug abuse,” Machakaire said.
He added that the initiative aligns with National Development Strategy 2 (NDS2) and Vision 2030 goals.
“We commend ZIFA and His Excellency President Mnangagwa for driving youth empowerment through sport.”
ZIFA President Nqobile Magwizi said the tournament’s launch directly supports national development priorities.
“The launch of the Munhumutapa Cup is aligned with the National Development Strategy 2 and the vision of leaving no one and no place behind,” Magwizi said.
He described the tournament as fundamentally developmental.
“The dignity with which Zimbabwean football advances is a reflection of the President’s able leadership. We are grateful to His Excellency for his unwavering support.”
FIFA President Gianni Infantino congratulated Zimbabwe on the unveiling of the competition, praising government backing and ZIFA’s efforts to broaden access to the sport.
“I congratulate Zimbabwe on the unveiling of the Munhumutapa Cup. Strong government support and ZIFA’s efforts to make football accessible are commendable. I wish the competition great success,” Infantino said.
The unveiling ceremony also showcased the Munhumutapa Cup trophies, crafted by renowned Zimbabwean luxury brand Patrick Mavros.
Designed in the likeness of the iconic Great Zimbabwe Conical Tower, the men’s trophy features a male crocodile skin engraving. In contrast, the women’s trophy carries a distinct female crocodile skin engraving — symbolising strength, heritage and national pride.
With US$25 million committed over five years, broad grassroots integration, continental qualification at stake, and strong government and international backing, the Munhumutapa Challenge Cup is poised to redefine Zimbabwe’s football landscape — connecting villages to cities and nurturing the next generation of talent.
