Government has officially commenced work on the rehabilitation and widening of a critical 16-kilometre stretch of Seke Road, signalling a major push in the Second Republic’s flagship road infrastructure programme.

Engineer Jarawani Kangara, the Ministry of Transport’s Director of Roads, confirmed that site handover is already in progress for the project, which will overhaul the busy thoroughfare from Velvet to ZRP Dema.

“Site handover is in progress for the rehabilitation and widening of Seke Road from Velvet to ZRP Dema (16km),” Engineer Kangara stated.

The project is expected to drastically improve traffic flow and safety on one of Harare’s southern arterial routes, which has been plagued by decay and heavy congestion.

In a parallel development, Engineer Kangara also provided an update on the ambitious Mabvuku Interchange, revealing that structural work is now visibly underway.

“Construction of the Mutare abutment is in progress on the Mabvuku Interchange project,” he said.

The abutment, a key load-bearing structure on the Mutare-bound side, marks a significant milestone in the project’s timeline.

Kilometre by Kilometre
Both projects are being executed under the Ministry’s transformative ‘Kilometre by Kilometre’ programme, which seeks to systematically overhaul Zimbabwe’s road network.

The necessity for the projects is acute. Seke Road, in its current state, has become a bottleneck that hampers economic productivity and vehicle movement for commuters travelling into and out of the city. Similarly, the Mabvuku Interchange is designed to decongest the chaotic intersection near Msasa Roundabout, providing a free-flowing link for traffic heading towards Mutare and beyond.

The Ministry views the rehabilitation of these arteries as essential not just for commuter convenience, but for lowering transport costs and stimulating economic activity in the surrounding communities.
