President Emmerson Mnangagwa has pledged his government’s unwavering support for empowering young people in science and technology, saying investing in youth is critical for building a prosperous Zimbabwe.

He made the remarks on Monday while addressing mourners at the National Heroes Acre during a ceremony honouring the late national hero Dr. Sydney Gata.

President Mnangagwa commended Dr. Gata’s pioneering contributions to the country’s energy and infrastructure development, emphasising that his visionary projects should inspire the next generation.

“The future of Zimbabwe lies in the hands of our youth. It is through science, technology, and innovation that we will build a modern, industrialised, and prosperous nation,” President Mnangagwa said. “We must equip our young people with the knowledge and skills they need to drive economic growth and ensure our nation’s self-reliance.”

The president added that his administration would continue to create programs and provide resources to support youth-led projects, especially in scientific fields.

“As we celebrate the life and achievements of Dr. Gata, let us remember that empowering our young people is the greatest tribute we can pay to our heroes. They must be encouraged to dream big, innovate, and take charge of building the Zimbabwe we all envision,” he said.

President Mnangagwa urged private sector players and academic institutions to partner with the government in advancing science education and supporting start-ups led by young innovators.

“Our youth are not just leaders of tomorrow; they are leaders of today. By investing in their scientific education and entrepreneurial spirit, we secure a brighter and more competitive future for our country,” he said.

The ceremony also included tributes to Dr. Gata’s work in modernising Zimbabwe’s energy sector and advancing rural electrification, achievements President Mnangagwa said should motivate young scientists and engineers to continue pushing boundaries in service of national development.

Dr. Gata is laid to rest at the National Heroes Acre, recognised for his dedication to national service and his contributions to transforming Zimbabwe’s infrastructure.
