Benza Hails Sports Gala as Crucial to Nurturing Football Talent

Herentals Colleges continues to play a leading role in football development across Zimbabwe, with its Sports Gala serving as a critical platform for identifying and nurturing young talent.

Speaking ahead of the Sports Gala held on the 18th of July, Herentals FC Head Coach Paul Benza highlighted the significance of the event in the school’s football journey.

“It is my pleasure that we are going to have a sports gala on the 18th of July and it is these sports galas that help us in the Premier League both for the boys and girls that we promote to play either in the Division 2 side, Division 1 and the Premier,” said Benza.
“Wilmore Chimbetu was learning at Herentals Budiriro, now he is playing in the Premier. We always keep records of our players from that tender age for the players who are going up to A Level.”

The sports gala has become a proven breeding ground for football talent. Wilmore Chimbetu, one of the success stories, attributes his progress to the Herentals system.

“I used to learn at Herentals Budiriro. I am a product of Herentals Colleges to the Premier League. I graduated from all ranks, from social league to the PSL,” said Chimbetu.

Herentals Division 2 Coach Ronald Chishaya also shared his journey and those of other talented players discovered through the same system.

“Inini ndakatanga 2009 kudzidza pa Herentals Budiriro. Takatorwa takawanda kunana Wilmore Chimbetu nana Gallis vari kuChegutu Pirates nana Everson Feremba vari kuMWOS FC,” said Chishaya.

Former students Liberty Chakoroma and Nyasha Chintuli — both originally from Manicaland — also rose through the Herentals pipeline.

“Liberty Chakoroma also learnt at Herentals together with Nyasha Chintuli, we used to call them from Manicaland,” said Benza.

The college has also taken strides in women’s football development.

“Kudzie Chiparausha is one of the female students who learnt at Herentals and now plays for Correctional Queens,” Benza added.
“We have players like Winnie Mapuwa, Grade 7 student from Herentals Mabvuku, represented Zimbabwe under 15.”

Admire Pasina, a Division 2 player from Chitungwiza, is another proud product of the Sports Gala.

“Taitambawo pama sports gala so nerimwe gore taimbawo pama sports gala iwayo ndobva ndazongo scoutawo naCoach Simbarashe Dedza kuti ndizo joiner team yavo,” Pasina recalled.
“So ndakazoita ma trials ne Division 2 ndikabudirira so now ndikutamba ikoko Division 2 Herentals.”

With a consistent track record of producing players who go on to play in Division 2, Division 1, and the Premier League, Herentals Colleges’ sports initiative remains a shining example of grassroots football development in Zimbabwe.

Footballers Union of Zimbabwe (FUZ) president Desmond Maringwa and vice president Herbert Dick are in Lisbon, Portugal, where they are attending the FIFPRO General Assembly alongside player unions from around the world.

The annual gathering brings together representatives from more than 60 national player associations to deliberate on key issues affecting professional footballers globally. This year’s agenda is expected to focus on player welfare, contractual rights, safeguarding standards, and the broader challenges facing the football workforce amid an evolving global calendar.

Maringwa and Dick’s participation underscores FUZ’s commitment to strengthening Zimbabwe’s voice within the international football community. By contributing to the discussions in Lisbon, the pair aim to ensure that the concerns of Zimbabwean players are represented in FIFPRO’s policy positions and future advocacy.

The assembly will also address emerging topics such as the rapid growth of women’s football, the impact of increased fixture congestion, and the need for enhanced protections for players at all levels. FUZ’s involvement offers an opportunity to learn best practices from other unions and to reinforce the union’s role in championing improved working conditions for local footballers.

The Lisbon meeting continues through the week, bringing together global union leaders to shape strategies that will influence the future of the game.

EARLY AFCON CAMP FOR WARRIORS

Published

on

Zimbabwe’s national football team is set to begin preparations for the Africa Cup of Nations earlier than usual, after authorities cleared an early December training camp for the Warriors.

The arrangement gives head coach Marina “Super Mario” Marinica a rare opportunity to work extensively with his squad ahead of the continental showpiece.

The local-based players will assemble immediately after the Premier Soccer League season ends this weekend, allowing the technical team uninterrupted contact time before the tournament.

For Marinica, who has so far only observed his side briefly in friendly matches against Algeria and Qatar, this extended period is particularly valuable.

The early camp comes at a critical time as Zimbabwe prepares for a tough Group B, where they will face Egypt, Angola and South Africa.

After suffering five consecutive group-stage exits, the Warriors are eager to change their fortunes.

By starting early, the coaches hope to build cohesion, refine their tactical organisation and gain a clearer understanding of which players can handle the demands of AFCON football.

The initial phase of the programme will focus on domestic players, with those playing abroad expected to join once released by their clubs.

A source close to the discussions said preparations have already been set in motion.

“The association recognises the importance of beginning the training camp early so the coach has enough time to assess the squad,” the insider said. “Everything has been agreed on, and if all goes well, camp will open in early December with local players reporting first.

The foreign-based players will join later depending on their club schedules.”
