Harare – Businessman and philanthropist Scott Sakupwanya has etched his name into Zimbabwean football history after steering his club from Division One all the way to winning the Castle Lager Premier Soccer League a rare and remarkable achievement in the country’s sporting story.

The club, which rose from humble beginnings under Sakupwanya’s leadership, has become only the second team in Zimbabwe’s football history to win the Premier League title soon after gaining promotion from the lower division.

Sakupwanya, known for his business ventures in gold trading and community empowerment, took over the team with a bold vision to bring professional standards, discipline, and modern management into local football.

His investment quickly transformed the club’s operations, from player welfare and infrastructure development to coaching and youth training.

“Football is more than a sport; it’s a platform to unite communities and create opportunities for young people.

I wanted to prove that with the right vision and resources, Zimbabwean football can reach international levels,” Sakupwanya said during a post-championship interview.

Under his guidance, the club recruited experienced technical staff and introduced a data-driven approach to player performance.

Training facilities were upgraded, salaries were paid on time, and players were motivated to perform at their best. The results were immediate  a string of victories in Division One that culminated in promotion to the Premier Soccer League.

In their debut top-flight season, the team defied expectations, defeating seasoned clubs and maintaining a consistent performance throughout the campaign.

Their triumph in the Castle Lager Premier Soccer League not only stunned fans but also inspired smaller clubs to dream beyond financial and structural limitations.

Football lovers in Zimbabwe credit Sakupwanya’s management style for blending business professionalism with community spirit.

Beyond the pitch, he has funded grassroots football tournaments and sponsored development projects in Mabvuku and surrounding areas, nurturing young talent and restoring hope to aspiring athletes.

For many, the success of Sakupwanya’s club represents a new chapter for Zimbabwean football one where visionary leadership and investment can transform the game’s fortunes.

As celebrations continue, the club’s story stands as a testament to how ambition, discipline, and proper management can turn a Division One dream into Premier League glory.

Footballers Union of Zimbabwe (FUZ) president Desmond Maringwa and vice president Herbert Dick are in Lisbon, Portugal, where they are attending the FIFPRO General Assembly alongside player unions from around the world.

The annual gathering brings together representatives from more than 60 national player associations to deliberate on key issues affecting professional footballers globally. EARLY AFCON CAMP FOR WARRIORS

Published

on

Zimbabwe’s national football team is set to begin preparations for the Africa Cup of Nations earlier than usual, after authorities cleared an early December training camp for the Warriors.

The arrangement gives head coach Marina “Super Mario” Marinica a rare opportunity to work extensively with his squad ahead of the continental showpiece.

The local-based players will assemble immediately after the Premier Soccer League season ends this weekend, allowing the technical team uninterrupted contact time before the tournament.

For Marinica, who has so far only observed his side briefly in friendly matches against Algeria and Qatar, this extended period is particularly valuable.

The early camp comes at a critical time as Zimbabwe prepares for a tough Group B, where they will face Egypt, Angola and South Africa.

After suffering five consecutive group-stage exits, the Warriors are eager to change their fortunes.

By starting early, the coaches hope to build cohesion, refine their tactical organisation and gain a clearer understanding of which players can handle the demands of AFCON football.

The initial phase of the programme will focus on domestic players, with those playing abroad expected to join once released by their clubs.

A source close to the discussions said preparations have already been set in motion.

“The association recognises the importance of beginning the training camp early so the coach has enough time to assess the squad,” the insider said. “Everything has been agreed on, and if all goes well, camp will open in early December with local players reporting first.

The foreign-based players will join later depending on their club schedules.”
