In the vibrant informal market of Mupedzanhamo, a group of resourceful entrepreneurs has turned sewing into a thriving industry, providing a lifeline for hundreds of families.

For years, Mupedzanhamo has been a hub of entrepreneurial activity, with artisans and traders selling everything from second-hand clothing to handmade crafts. However, the sewing sector has emerged as a standout success story, with over 200 tailors and seamstresses working tirelessly to create unique, affordable garments.

“I was struggling to make ends meet, but sewing has given me a sense of purpose,” said Esther Moyo, a skilled seamstress. “I can now provide for my family and send my children to school.”

The sewing industry in Mupedzanhamo has grown exponentially, with artisans producing a wide range of items, from traditional Zimbabwean clothing to modern fashion designs. The market’s proximity to Harare’s city center and its affordability have made it an attractive destination for customers seeking quality, handmade products.

“Mupedzanhamo is more than just a market; it’s a community,” emphasized Tendai Nyamukondiwa, a local tailor. “We share skills, resources, and support each other to create something special.”

The success of Mupedzanhamo’s sewing industry has also caught the attention of local authorities, who are now working to formalize the market and provide artisans with training and resources.

“We recognize the potential of this sector and are committed to supporting these entrepreneurs,” said a local based business woman Samantha Munemo  “By working together, we can create a thriving, sustainable economy that benefits everyone.”
