Another fire has devastated the Glenview 8 Complex in Harare, destroying property worth thousands of dollars in the early hours of the morning.

According to Councillor Denford Ngadziore, Chairperson of the City of Harare’s Small to Medium Enterprises Committee, about 100 traders were affected by the fire, which erupted around 5am. Goods estimated at over US$100,000, including furniture items like wardrobes, kitchen units, and sofas, were destroyed.

This marks the tenth fire at the busy complex since 2015.

Preliminary reports indicate that the blaze may have started accidentally when security guards lit a fire to keep warm. Unfortunately, it spread rapidly and caused major damage.

Ngadziore praised the swift response from the City of Harare Fire Brigade, saying their quick action helped stop the fire from spreading even further.

He also expressed concern over repeated safety issues at the site and said those responsible for the incident must be held accountable.

Ngadziore emphasized the need for long-term solutions, including the full redevelopment of the complex. Over 4,000 informal traders rely on the area for their livelihoods, making it a vital part of the city’s economy.

Plans are underway to modernise the site through a Public-Private Partnership, with a strong focus on fire safety and proper urban design. As part of these efforts, work is expected to start soon on building a new People’s Market nearby, which will include over 30 new kiosks offering traders a safer and improved working environment.
