The Minister of Local Government and Public Works, Hon. Daniel Garwe, has officially launched the Local Authorities Technical Support Unit (LATSU) and handed over 20 pieces of equipment, including refuse collection trucks and tippers, today at Makombe Building in Harare.

The LATSU project will assist councillors and mayors in cleaning cities across the nation. This initiative will enhance urban hygiene and promote cleaner, smarter cities.

Speaking at the launch, Hon. Garwe emphasised the importance of LATSU to councillors and mayors, noting that under Vision 2030 and the principle of “leaving no one and no place behind,” the government is providing equipment that local authorities can hire to clean their areas.

“President Mnangagwa instructed us to assist you in carrying out work in various places. This programme comes directly from our President,” said Hon. Garwe.

He stated that all the country’s cities will receive equipment to help keep their areas clean.

The LATSU department, led by the Department of Public Works, will manage the use of the equipment in all cities.

The Ministry of Local Government and Public Works is responsible for ensuring that this equipment is hired out to all local authorities.

“We have local authorities that are currently in intensive care status, such as Marondera Municipality and Beitbridge. These are the ones we are going to start with immediately,” Hon. Garwe added.

By the end of this year, 85 pieces of equipment, including refuse collection trucks, tippers, and yellow machinery, will have been distributed.
