BSc Student from Zimbabwe Killed in Attack After Altercation with Security Guard
After spending eight days in critical condition at AIIMS Bathinda, 22-year-old Zimbabwean student Ziweya Leeroy succumbed to his injuries on Thursday.
Leeroy, who was enrolled in the BSc Radiology and Imaging Technology program at Guru Kashi University in Talwandi Sabo since 2023, was reportedly attacked on August 13—just a day after a confrontation with a university security guard, Dilpreet Singh.
According to the police, seven individuals have been taken into custody so far, and Section 103 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), pertaining to murder, has been added to the case initially registered at the Talwandi Sabo police station.
Assistant Sub-Inspector Des Raj noted in his report that the dispute began on August 12 with a verbal altercation between Leeroy and Dilpreet Singh. The following day, Dilpreet allegedly returned with accomplices—identified as Lovepreet, Mangu, and Manpreet Singh—and assaulted Leeroy outside the university premises.
Leeroy suffered severe head injuries and was immediately admitted to AIIMS Bathinda. Authorities had initially charged the accused under BNS sections for attempted murder, wrongful restraint, causing injury, unlawful assembly, and rioting with deadly weapons.
Senior Superintendent of Police Amneet Kondal confirmed the arrests and stated that efforts are ongoing to apprehend two additional suspects believed to be involved. “The murder charge has now been included in the case, and further investigation is underway,” Kondal said.
