Phaphamani Irrigation Scheme Sets Benchmark for Agricultural Success in Umguza
The Phaphamani Irrigation Scheme in Umguza District has emerged as a leading model of agricultural excellence, showcasing how innovation, hard work, and strategic partnerships can drive food security and climate-smart farming in Zimbabwe.
Speaking during a field visit, Agriculture Business Advisory Officer Ms. Sithabisiwe Mpofu praised the efforts of the scheme’s 12-member team, commending their commitment to sustainable farming and business-minded agricultural practices.
“These farmers have shown that agriculture is not just about producing food — it is a business that requires planning, discipline, and strategic thinking,” said Mpofu. “Their results speak volumes.”
The scheme is currently thriving, with crop yields projected to exceed five tonnes per hectare — a remarkable figure that reflects both meticulous planning and consistent implementation of best practices.
Mpofu attributed the success to the farmers’ early planning, timely operations, and the selection of region-appropriate crop varieties. With climate change continuing to challenge traditional farming methods, the adoption of climate-smart agriculture has become essential.
“As an advisor, I work closely with farmers to help them select the most suitable varieties and ensure they adapt to changing climatic conditions. That is what keeps schemes like Phaphamani successful and resilient,” she added.
The Phaphamani Irrigation Scheme has also benefited significantly from partnerships with development organisations. Notably, the Agricultural Finance Corporation (AFC) and the Food and Agriculture Organisation (FAO) have provided support in the form of inputs, training, and financial guidance.
“These collaborations have played a critical role in the scheme’s achievements. The support has enabled farmers to meet — and in some cases exceed — their expected yields,” Mpofu said.
As the country continues to push for increased food security and economic empowerment through agriculture, the Phaphamani model offers a replicable blueprint for success, especially in rural communities.
