Deputy Minister Commissions Councillors’ Motorbikes and Fire Tender in Gutu
The Deputy Minister of Local Government and Public Works, Albert Mavunga, on Friday commissioned 51 motorbikes for councillors and a Red Lion fire tender at Gutu Rural District Council, in a move aimed at improving service delivery and emergency response in the district.
Speaking at the event, Deputy Minister Mavunga said the commissioning of the motorbikes and the fire tender marked a “significant milestone” in efforts to achieve Vision 2030 and the National Development Strategy 2 (NDS2).
“These assets are crucial in enhancing service delivery, promoting economic growth and improving the quality of life for our people,” Honorable Mavunga said.
The 51 motorbikes are expected to boost councillors’ mobility, enabling them to cover vast wards, some stretching more than 40 kilometres, and to respond more effectively to community needs.
“Our councillors are the backbone of the local government system. By providing these motorbikes, we are equipping them with the necessary tools to reach even the most remote areas, ensuring that no citizen and no place is left behind,” Hon Mavunga said, urging councillors to use the motorbikes responsibly.
The fire tender, the minister noted, will significantly improve the district’s ability to handle veld fires and other emergencies. Over half of Gutu district is highly susceptible to veld fires, which often threaten lives, property, and the environment.
“The availability of this fire tender is a welcome development which will strengthen the local authority’s preparedness agenda,” Hon Mavunga said.
Hon Mavunga also commended Gutu Rural District Council, traditional leaders, and development partners for their role in driving local development and supporting the welfare of communities.
“These investments align perfectly with government’s commitment to devolution, decentralization, and community empowerment,” he said. “As we move towards Vision 2030, we must continue to prioritize investment in education, infrastructure, and local governance.”
The event was attended by the Minister of State for Provincial Affairs and Devolution, Cde E. Chadzamira, Members of Parliament, traditional leaders, senior government officials, council staff, and other stakeholders
