Amorim Unfazed by Pressure as United’s Troubles Run Deep

Manchester United manager Rúben Amorim insists he has “never been concerned” about his job security despite mounting criticism of the team’s performances and the turmoil surrounding the club.

United’s struggles have triggered strong words from former captain Wayne Rooney, who says the Red Devils have lost their identity. “I don’t recognise the football club anymore,” Rooney said. “I don’t see fight, I don’t see character, I don’t see a desire to win. Every game, I go expecting them to lose or just scrape a point.”

The ex-England skipper also questioned the wider state of the club, pointing to sweeping changes under new part-owner Sir Jim Ratcliffe. “It’s not just about results on the pitch,” he said. “Staff who have served 20 or 30 years are being sacked. These are important people to Manchester United. The soul has gone from the club—it needs a new engine, a fresh lease of life.”

Ratcliffe’s Ineos Group, which bought a 27.7% stake in United worth £1.25bn ($1.6bn) in February 2024, has assumed control of football operations. The Glazer family, however, remain majority shareholders.

United’s workforce has also thinned dramatically, with the overall number of employees falling from 1,100 to about 700 in the past two years following a wave of controversial redundancies.

Despite the turbulence, Amorim has remained calm under pressure, reiterating his commitment to restoring belief and stability at Old Trafford.
