Plumtree Residents Urged to Use Official Emergency Contacts
Plumtree Town’s Fire and Emergency Services Department has appealed to residents to use official contact numbers in emergencies rather than reaching out to personal acquaintances within the department. Authorities warned that informal calls contribute to delays in response times.
In a bid to strengthen emergency service delivery, the municipality purchased two new ambulances in August, replacing an old vehicle that had been grounded for three months due to age and costly repairs. Officials say the new ambulances offer a more reliable and cost-effective solution.
Lead firefighter Mr. Busani Mthethwa emphasized the need for proper communication channels during emergencies.
> “We strongly advise residents to call the responsible departments directly in an emergency rather than contacting someone they know personally within the office. This informal chain of communication slows down our rapid response to save lives and property,” he said.
The municipality also underscored its commitment to continuous staff training, with technical teams attending monthly workshops to stay updated on modern skills and technology.
Town Secretary Mr. Thembelani Nyoni noted that efforts are underway to establish a toll-free emergency hotline.
> “We communicate with residents through the council’s information-sharing platforms and are currently working with service providers to establish a toll-free emergency hotline,” he said.
Until the hotline is operational, residents are urged to contact emergency services on 0771 380 327 or 0715 780 047
Emergency assistance is also available in person at municipal stations located at Dingumuzi Shopping Centre, Dingumuzi Clinic, and along the town’s central road.
