Zim headed for “world class” road network – Eng Makumbe
Itai Mazire in Lupane
Permanent Secretary for Transport and Infrastructural Development, Engineer Joy Makumbe, says Zimbabwe is positioning itself for a world class road network as Government intensifies its nationwide road refurbishment programme.
Speaking during an inspection of ongoing works on the Lupane, Nkayi and Kwekwe roads, she said the road rehabilitation exercise is progressing well and that contractors are meeting their targets.
“We have to appreciate the work being done here. It is not easy, there is excavation, levelling and local gravel importation, and we are here to bring safety on our roads.
“Government is in partnership with these players to restore our dilapidated roads.
“As Government, we are working towards President Emmerson Mnangagwa’s Vision 2030, where an upper middle income economy will have a safe road network.
“With the work we are doing, we see Zimbabwe gaining world class recognition for our road network systems,” said Eng Makumbe.
She said the current rehabilitation effort marks one of the most significant infrastructure overhauls in recent years.
“Teams on the ground are working around the clock and set targets will be achieved.
“Give us time; let us not go around saying they have only completed a kilometre.
“We are working to promote the livelihoods of all Zimbabweans in all sectors through creating a safe road network.”
She noted that the upgraded roads are expected to improve traffic flow, support economic activity and reduce transport costs.
“We are going to introduce new toll plazas along key highways as part of the programme.”
According to the ministry, the toll plazas are intended to strengthen revenue collection for road maintenance and ensure the long term sustainability of the network.
Eng Makumbe said the combined upgrades and new tolling system will align Zimbabwe’s road infrastructure with regional and international standards.

Polio blitz: 20 districts targeted
The Ministry of Health and Child Care has launched an aggressive two-round polio vaccination campaign to “interrupt the transmission of polioviruses” across 20 high-risk districts, mobilising door-to-door teams to reach every child under five.
Round one runs 20–23 April 2026, with a second round scheduled for 2–5 June 2026.
The drive is part of a “coordinated regional effort alongside Botswana, Malawi, Mozambique and Zambia”.
Targeted districts include Bulawayo’s Emakandeni, Northern Suburbs and Nkulumane; Harare City, Chitungwiza, Epworth and Ruwa, as well as Mutare, Chimanimani, Chipinge, Mbire, Mudzi, Kariba, Chiredzi, Binga, Hwange, Bulilima, Matobo and Gwanda.
“All children under five years of age in these districts must be vaccinated, regardless of their previous vaccination status,” the ministry said.
Vaccination teams are using “door-to-door outreach, fixed sites, and mobile units to ensure every child is reached”.
Health authorities urge parents to cooperate fully. No polio case has been announced, but the pre-emptive strike follows regional detection of circulating vaccine-derived polioviruses.
