Bellarmine Chatunga Mugabe, the son of the late former Zimbabwean president Robert Mugabe, was arrested today by South African police after an employee was shot at the family’s residence in the affluent Hyde Park suburb of Johannesburg.

Police in Plumtree have arrested two suspects following a major drug bust that has sent shockwaves through the border town.

The operation took place on 15 February 2026, when officers from the Zimbabwe Republic Police stopped a Toyota Quantum during routine patrols. A search of the vehicle allegedly uncovered large quantities of illegal cough syrup concealed inside.

The suspects, Msawenkosi Ndlovu (49) and Vengai Chawa (41), were immediately arrested and charged with unlawful possession of controlled substances.

Police seized a total of 9,294 bottles of illicit cough syrup, comprising 5,124 bottles of Broncleer and 4,170 bottles of Astra Pain. Authorities estimate the combined street value of the drugs at approximately US$80,000.

The Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) has issued a strong warning urging members of the public to exercise extreme caution when responding to online offers, particularly job opportunities advertised on social media and other digital platforms.

The warning follows a disturbing rape case reported in Glen View 7, where a 19-year-old woman was allegedly sexually abused after responding to an online job offer.

According to police, the incident occurred on 9 February 2026. The suspect allegedly contacted the victim after she expressed interest in a job advertised online.

He arranged to meet her at Machipisa Shopping Centre. After the meeting, the suspect reportedly took the victim to a house in Glen View 7, where the sexual abuse allegedly occurred.

The victim was later released on 10 February 2026, and the matter was reported to the police. Investigations are currently underway, and the suspect is being sought.

The ZRP has cautioned the public, especially young people and job seekers, to avoid meeting strangers in secluded places or entering private vehicles under the guise of job interviews or employment offers.

Police have urged citizens to verify job opportunities through legitimate channels and to inform trusted relatives or friends before attending any meetings arranged online.

“The public should remain vigilant and prioritise personal safety at all times,” the ZRP said, adding that criminals are increasingly using online platforms to lure unsuspecting victims.
