Zimbabwe Hosts Trilateral Transport Meeting with Malawi and Mozambique

Transport and Infrastructural Development Permanent Secretary, Eng. J.P. Makumbe, today officially opened the inaugural Zimbabwe–Malawi–Mozambique Trilateral Joint Route Management Group and Joint Committee Meeting in Harare.

The meeting, which is running from 9 to 11 June 2026, brings together delegates from the three countries to discuss ways of improving transport systems, trade and regional connectivity.

Addressing delegates, Eng. Makumbe underscored the importance of regional collaboration in improving corridor efficiency, harmonising transport regulations, strengthening border operations and enhancing infrastructure development across the three countries.

“Transport corridors linking Zimbabwe, Malawi and Mozambique are critical drivers of trade, investment and economic growth in the region,” she said.

The Permanent Secretary highlighted ongoing infrastructure development projects in Zimbabwe, including the Harare–Masvingo–Beitbridge Highway, upgrades to key regional trunk roads and the modernisation of border posts to facilitate the seamless movement of people and goods.

Eng. Makumbe also commended Mozambique for ratifying the African Road Safety Charter.

“Mozambique’s ratification of the African Road Safety Charter is a significant milestone that has enabled the Charter to enter into force as Africa’s first legally binding continental road safety framework,” she noted.

Calling for stronger regional cooperation, Eng. Makumbe urged delegates to focus on practical solutions to challenges affecting regional transport systems.

“We must persue practical, coordinated solutions to address challenges affecting regional transport systems and to strengthen cooperation in support of regional integration, trade and sustainable economic development,” Eng Makumbe added.

The meeting is expected to strengthen cooperation among Zimbabwe, Malawi and Mozambique and enhance the efficiency of key transport corridors that support regional trade and economic growth.
