BREAKING NEWS : Airforce of Zimbabwe Helicopter Crashes with Crew Onboard
By Enia Dube
A helicopter carrying crew members from the Airforce of Zimbabwe crashed yesterday (25.09.24) in Masvingo, shortly after taking off from the airport. Fortunately, there were no fatalities, and only one person was injured. The incident occurred after President Emmerson Mnangagwa’s 82nd birthday celebration at the Great Zimbabwe Monuments, where he launched the new national event, Munhumutapa Day.
The helicopter was part of the presidential fleet and was not carrying the President or any high-ranking officials. The cause of the crash is still unknown and is being investigated by the Civil Aviation Authorities.
According to the Secretary for Information, Publicity and Broadcasting Nick Mangwana ,”I can confirm that an Airforce of Zimbabwe helicopter experienced a technical issue and made an emergency landing in Masvingo earlier yesterday. Thankfully, no lives were lost and only minor injuries were reported. The Civil Aviation Authorities have launched a thorough investigation into the incident, and their findings will be shared with the nation in due course.”
This incident raises concerns about the safety and maintenance of the presidential helicopters, especially given a similar incident in 2021 where a helicopter made an emergency landing due to mechanical failure.
The investigation’s findings will be shared with the public once available, and the nation waits with bated breath for the outcome.
