Nketa Constituency Legislator Advocates for Veterans’ Welfare
By Raymond Sibanda
Harare – Honorable Member of Parliment (MP) Albert T. Mavunga of Nketa Constituency, Bulawayo, has brought attention to the ongoing struggles of Zimbabwe’s liberation struggle veterans who were successfully vetted in 2022.
During a Question and Answer (Q&A) session at Mount Hampden Parliament, Mavunga urged Minister of Veterans of the Liberation Struggle Affairs, Hon Senator Monica Mavhunga, to collaborate with relevant ministries to address the veterans’ challenges.
Hon Mavunga emphasized the need for financial support for education expenses, ensuring veterans’ families can access quality education. He also called for food assistance through the Ministry of Agriculture, providing food hampers to support veterans’ welfare. Additionally, Honorable MP Sakupwanya stressed the importance of addressing war collaborators’ welfare, ensuring no one is left behind.
The government has demonstrated its commitment to supporting veterans by releasing ZWL 47.2 million to facilitate the vetting process for war collaborators and non-combatant cadres, as announced by Minister Mavhunga. This exercise aims to verify and recognize the contributions of genuine veterans to Zimbabwe’s independence.
Notably, this development follows the government’s April assurance to resume vetting, which was previously halted due to funding constraints. With over 93 363 war collaborators and non-combatant cadres awaiting vetting, this exercise marks the final phase of verification efforts.
Hon Mavunga’s plea serves as a call to action, highlighting the significance of supporting those who fought for Zimbabwe’s freedom.
