Madziwa FM officially launched

Madziwa FM was officially launched today by Minister of Information Publicity and Broadcasting Services, Dr Jenfan Muswere, and Minister of Information Community Technology, Postal and Courier Services, Dr Tatenda Mevetere, in Madziwa, Mashonaland Central.

The launch was graced by Unesco Regional Director, Ms Nisha. She noted that, “community radio stations are the first step in providing access to information by the public sector. It is the first step in community empowerment, so people can rise their issues and express their solutions.”

Unesco Regional Director further added that community radio stations are provide access to information to communities and help people exercise their right to information.

The launch comes as the country commemorates this year’s International Day of Universal Access to Information. The day was designated by the UNESCO General Conference, and it was inaugurated in November 2015. The first commemoration were first held on the 28th of September 2016.

A total of 14 community radio stations have been licensed by the Broadcasting Authority of Zimbabwe (BAZ). The licensing of community radio stations is aligned with the Second Republic’s goal of decentralising broadcasting services, ensuring that no community is left behind. Madziwa FM provides information to the people of Shamva and Mashonaland Central, fostering the use of indigenous languages.
