By Tatenda Muzenda
The scent of roasted mealies wafts through the central business district (CBD), enticing passersby to stop and sample the tasty treat.
Street vendors, strategically positioned on busy corners, expertly roast the golden kernels, filling the air with the unmistakable aroma of toasted maize.
“It’s a staple snack for many office workers,” said Privilege Moyo, a vendor. “We roast fresh batches throughout the day to keep up with demand.”
For just a few dollars, locals and visitors alike can enjoy a hot, crunchy serving of roasted mealies, often paired with a sprinkle of salt or a dash of spice.
“The smell alone is irresistible,” said Noma Ndlovu, a finance worker. “It’s a quick, affordable snack that brightens up my day,” she added.
As the lunchtime rush approaches, vendors eagerly prepare for the influx of customers, their makeshift grills sizzling with activity.
Roasted mealies have become an integral part of the CBD’s street food scene, providing a flavorful and convenient option for busy professionals and shoppers.
