by Raymond Sibanda
MIDLANDS – The Zimbabwe Environmental Law Association (ZELA) is organizing the 2024 CSOs-Parliament Indaba in Kwekwe from October 4-5, 2024. This pivotal event brings together over 20 Members of Parliament, including portfolio committee members for mines, environment, and budget.
_Objectives:_
The Indaba aims to share evidence-based information on Domestic Resources Mobilisation (DRM) strategies and Responsible Mining Standards, taking stock of government policies and legislative tools, and incorporating CSO submissions into the 2025 National Budget.
_Promoting Transparency and Accountability_
An effective Parliament is crucial for achieving transparency and accountability in public resource management, as outlined in Section 298 of the constitution and the National Development Strategy (NDS 1) 2021-2025. ZELA’s work focuses on building parliament’s capacity on natural resources governance.
_Key Outcomes_
The Indaba anticipates parliamentarians will demonstrate appreciation for CSO-generated evidence and provide recommendations to the Executive. By fostering collaboration between CSOs and parliament, ZELA promotes sustainable and equitable use of natural resources in Zimbabwe.
