Mbare Traders’ Market Revamp: A Game-Changer for Zimbabwe’s Economy
By Enia Dube
Harare’s iconic Mbare Traders’ Market is undergoing a transformative makeover following a devastating fire in October. Masimba Holdings, a renowned construction firm, has been contracted to rebuild the market, which will boast a modern three-story structure accommodating 10,000 traders.
The revamped market promises to create thousands of jobs and stimulate local economic growth. A budget hotel will provide affordable lodging for farmers and traders, while state-of-the-art cold rooms will preserve perishable goods, reducing waste and extending shelf life. Each floor will cater to specific traders, with hardware vendors on the ground floor, vegetable and perishable item sellers on the first floor, and other products on the second floor.
The government emphasized the project’s potential to enhance economic opportunities for traders and farmers. “This market will be a one-stop-shop for farmers and traders, offering value-addition facilities for on-site product processing and packaging,” he noted. Masimba Holdings CEO assured that the complex will meet world- standards while remaining affordable.
The project’s impact extends beyond the market itself, contributing to Zimbabwe’s overall development by boosting the economy and improving traders’ and farmers’ lives. With its strategic location and enhanced facilities, Mbare Traders’ Market is poised to become a thriving commercial hub.
The reconstruction project is expected to be completed within six months. Masimba Holdings is working closely with the Local Government Ministry and other stakeholders to ensure the market’s success. As Zimbabwe looks to the future, the revamped Mbare Traders’ Market is set to play a vital role in driving economic growth and improving lives.
