Opposition MP Hails Mnangagwa’s Rare Parliament Visit

Opposition Member of Parliament Charlton Hwende, Chairperson of the Public Accounts Committee, has publicly praised President Emmerson Mnangagwa for his recent unannounced visit to Parliament.

The visit, which took place on July 9, 2025, marks the third time Mnangagwa has attended outside official opening ceremonies, a stark contrast to his predecessor, Robert Mugabe, who never participated beyond such events.

Hwende, a prominent figure in the Citizens Coalition for Change (CCC), took to social media to commend the move, noting its significance.

“Mugabe never attended Parliament outside the official opening ceremonies. This is the 3rd time that President ED has come to Parliament outside the official opening ceremonies. Next time, we must have the President during questioning time responding to our questions,” he wrote.

The unexpected appearance during a question-and-answer session has sparked debate, with some viewing it as a step toward greater accountability.

Hwende’s remarks suggest a push for Mnangagwa to engage directly with lawmakers, a practice rarely seen under Mugabe’s 37-year rule.

The opposition MPs’ praise, unusual given the tense political climate, has fueled discussions about potential shifts in parliamentary dynamics.
