Former Nigerian President Muhammadu Buhari Dies at 82 in London
Muhammadu Buhari, Nigeria’s former president, has died at the age of 82 in a private medical facility in London.
The announcement was made by his longtime aide, Garba Shehu, via the social media platform X (formerly Twitter).
In the statement, Shehu said:
“With deep sorrow, the Buhari family announces the death of former President Muhammadu Buhari earlier today in London, where he had been receiving medical care. May Allah grant him eternal rest in Aljannatul Firdaus.”
According to sources close to the family, Buhari had been admitted to the hospital after experiencing complications during a routine check-up. Although his condition initially showed signs of improvement, it worsened significantly in the days leading to his passing.
While the specific illness has not been made public, Buhari’s history of seeking medical attention abroad during his time in office is well-documented.
Buhari holds a unique place in Nigerian history, having served both as a military ruler from 1983 to 1985 and later as a civilian president from 2015 to 2023. His election in 2015 marked the first time an incumbent president was unseated by the opposition in Nigeria’s democratic history.
His administration is noted for prioritizing anti-corruption initiatives, economic diversification efforts, and attempts at security reform, though challenges with insurgency persisted throughout his leadership.
Following the news of his death, condolences have begun pouring in from across Nigeria and the wider African continent. The federal government is expected to announce a national mourning period shortly. Funeral arrangements will be made in consultation with Islamic scholars and community leaders.
President Buhari is survived by his wife, Aisha, and their children. He had often expressed a desire for a modest burial in accordance with Islamic customs in his hometown of Daura, Katsina State.
