Zimbabwe’s ruling party, Zanu-PF, has reiterated its commitment to extending President Emmerson Mnangagwa’s stay in office beyond the current constitutional limit of 2028, confirming that efforts to implement a key 2023 party resolution remain on track.

Speaking during an interview on ZiFM Stereo’s “The Platform”, Zanu-PF Director of Information Farai Marapira confirmed that the party is actively working to implement Resolution Number One from the 2023 National People’s Conference. This resolution seeks to pave the way for President Mnangagwa to potentially serve beyond the constitutionally mandated two terms.

“The implementation of our 2023 conference resolutions is ongoing, including the resolution concerning the extension of the President’s tenure,” said Marapira. “This resolution is not just a party stance; it reflects the will of the people who have confidence in the President’s leadership.”

According to Zimbabwe’s Constitution, a president can only serve two five-year terms. President Mnangagwa, who assumed office in 2017 and was re-elected in 2018 and 2023, is expected to step down at the end of his second term in 2028. He has consistently maintained that he will abide by the Constitution, describing himself as a firm constitutionalist.

Despite this, some within Zanu-PF argue that the President should stay on to complete his vision for transforming Zimbabwe into an upper-middle-income economy by 2030. The party says it intends to “persuade” Mnangagwa to accept the extension, framing it as a continuation of his legacy and a response to national demand.

The prospect of extending the presidential term limit is likely to ignite political and legal debate, with critics warning it could undermine democratic principles. However, Zanu-PF remains adamant that the idea has popular support within its structures.
