BAZ Raises Concerns Over Flouting of Broadcasting Laws

The Broadcasting Authority of Zimbabwe (BAZ) has raised alarm over the increasing number of internet-based broadcasters who are sharing content that violates national broadcasting standards and regulations.

In a press statement, BAZ expressed concern about the spread of unverified, harmful, or offensive material on digital platforms. The authority described this as a “blatant disregard” for Zimbabwe’s broadcasting laws.

The statement emphasised the need for all content creators, whether operating on traditional or digital platforms, to comply with existing legal frameworks.

These include the Broadcasting Services Act [Chapter 12:06], the Broadcasting Services (Licensing and Content) Regulations, 2004 [SI 185/2004] and the Broadcasting Services (Code of Conduct for Broadcasters) Regulations, 2023 [SI 148/2023]

“These instruments set the standards for responsible broadcasting,” BAZ noted, stressing that content must respect individual rights, uphold national values, and contribute positively to society.

While acknowledging constitutional freedoms of expression and media, BAZ warned that these rights must be exercised responsibly and lawfully. It further clarified that broadcasting over the internet does not exempt anyone from the ethical and legal duties expected of licensed broadcasters.

The Authority pledged to monitor both traditional and digital media, promising firm enforcement of existing laws to protect the integrity of Zimbabwe’s media landscape.

BAZ also urged all broadcasters to familiarise themselves with the Code of Conduct for Broadcasters and ensure that their content meets legal and professional standards.
