Parliament Probes Sugar Industry Amid Production Cost Concerns
Zimbabwe’s sugar production sector is currently under review by the Parliamentary Portfolio Committee on Industry and Commerce, with representatives from several government ministries and state entities providing testimony.
Among those who appeared before the committee were Professor Obert Jiri, the Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Lands, Agriculture, Fisheries, Water and Rural Development, along with officials from the Zimbabwe Electricity Transmission and Distribution Company (ZETDC) and the Ministry of Industry and Commerce.
The committee, led by Zaka South Member of Parliament Clemence Chiduwa, is examining the performance and challenges facing the sugar value chain.
During the session, Professor Jiri highlighted that one of the major issues affecting the industry is the rising cost of production.
