Trump Has Chronic Venous Insufficiency, White House Confirms
U.S. President Donald Trump has been diagnosed with chronic venous insufficiency, the White House announced Thursday, following growing public curiosity over visible bruising on his hands and swelling in his legs.
Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt addressed the concerns, explaining that Trump recently experienced noticeable leg swelling, prompting doctors to perform a full medical evaluation, including a vascular study to assess his vein function.
Leavitt clarified that the bruises seen on Trump’s hands were likely caused by frequent handshakes, leading to minor soft tissue damage. She also noted that Trump takes aspirin daily to support cardiovascular health, which may contribute to increased bruising.
Now 79, Trump has often described himself as being in peak physical condition, once declaring he was “the healthiest president that’s ever lived.”
Doctors have diagnosed him with chronic venous insufficiency—a condition in which veins in the legs fail to efficiently return blood to the heart, resulting in fluid buildup and swelling in the lower extremities.
According to Leavitt, the condition is common among individuals over the age of 70 and is not considered serious in Trump’s case. She added that all test results came back normal, with no signs of blood clots or arterial disease.
The White House assured the public that a full medical report will be released.
Speculation about Trump’s health had intensified after he was seen with swollen legs during the FIFA Club World Cup final held in New Jersey on July 13.
Days earlier, photos taken at a meeting with Bahraini Prime Minister Salman bin Hamad Al Khalifa showed discoloration on his hands. Similar marks were also noted in February during a meeting with French President Emmanuel Macron.
These images circulated widely online, fueling rumors about a possible undisclosed illness.
However, during his annual physical exam in April, White House physician Dr. Sean Barbabella declared Trump’s overall physical and cognitive health to be “excellent.”
Trump, who was 78 years and seven months old when he began his second term in January, holds the distinction of being the oldest U.S. president at the time of inauguration.
