Midlands Province—Minister of Local Government and Public Works Daniel Garwe chided Chirumanzu Rural District Council councillors not to shut the door on the newly installed chief, stressing that he was an integral part of these meetings and should attend to advise them, promoting a team-orientated approach to local governance.

Minister Garwe said this while addressing a crowd that recently gathered at Gonawapotera High School in Chaka to witness the installation ceremony of Chief Chirumanzu (Abraham Marufu Nyamande).

Do councillors not shut the door on our chief, said Minister Garwe.

“Chief Chirumanzu, you have numerous responsibilities. President Mnangagwa tasked me with providing you with your tools of the trade (a vehicle and cellphone), signifying the importance of your roles. I urge you to use your judgement to address community concerns, even those that might seem unreasonable,” he said.

As part of Chief Chirumanzu’s package, a borehole is going to be drilled at his homestead, with allowances from the government and the chief’s granary (a food security for the community).

Minister Garwe also assured the chief that he is a “servant” of the president, available to hear his concerns, and underscored the importance of restoring culture and ubuntu.

Meanwhile, Minister Garwe reiterated a significant message from President Mnangagwa for Chief Chirumanzu to lead the fight against drug and substance abuse in his area.

You must educate both the young and old about the dangers of drugs like marijuana and illicit brews (tumbwa and Musombodhiya), as they have a destructive impact on individuals and families.

The minister emphasised the president’s desire for a well-built nation with disciplined children.

Minister Garwe also touched upon the role of teachers in parenting, suggesting they assist parents in disciplining children, distinguishing this approach from American or British methods.

He also reminded Chief Chirumanzu to jealously guard forests due to reports of rampant deforestation and veld fires, stressing the importance of sustainability.
