President Emmerson Mnangagwa, who currently chairs the Southern African Development Community (SADC), has returned to Zimbabwe following a diplomatic visit to Kenya. During the visit, he and East African Community (EAC) Chairperson, President William Ruto, officially appointed five facilitators tasked with helping to resolve the ongoing conflict in eastern Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC).

On arrival at Robert Gabriel Mugabe International Airport, President Mnangagwa was received by Vice President Dr. Constantino Chiwenga (Retired General), Defence Minister Oppah Muchinguri-Kashiri, Chief Secretary to the President and Cabinet Dr. Martin Rushwaya, senior government officials, and members of the security services.

The President’s delegation to Nairobi included Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Trade Professor Amon Murwira, Deputy Chief Secretary for Presidential Communications Mr. George Charamba, and other top officials.

Following their closed-door discussions, Presidents Mnangagwa and Ruto spoke to the media, expressing appreciation to the former African leaders who agreed to serve as peace facilitators. They acknowledged the complexity of the assignment and praised the appointees for stepping up to take on such a significant role.

The appointed facilitators will engage with the DRC government, opposition leaders, and civil society groups, aiming to promote lasting peace and stability in the eastern part of the country, which has been plagued by unrest for years.
